I once heard a speaker say, “Every decision is a financial decision”. To a certain extent, this is true.
Yes, we are faced with choices everyday and there are endless decisions to make in our lives.
To start with, when we wake up in the morning, all of us may have the same routine for example : turn on the lights, drink water, eat breakfast and so on. Everything that we did have financial implications on our next utilities bill and grocery items.
But how about when we are faced with moments of decision when it will have a far reaching impact in our future?
For example, it is given that we cannot choose our parents or even our children but everything else in life depend upon our choices. The choice of a future partner, spouse or mate is a big time decision and it will have far-reaching repercussions on your finances. This holds true esp in the Filipino culture since when you marry, you are not only marrying the other person but another family.
Sometimes, when we decide by ourselves, we can fail. We may think that our choice may seem to be wise and smart but in the end, our lives would have become miserable because of the poor choices we made in the past. You see failed marriages, bad debts and failed businesses or investments to name a few.
Think of how we spend our money. If we do not know how to use it wisely, in the end, we may end up regretting not preparing for our future when we were younger. The same thing goes when we decide to put up a business that we know nothing about and we joined the bandwagon anyway because everybody is doing it.
How then can we avoid mistakes and make the right choice?
Pray to God to help you make the right decision.
How do you know when you have made the right decision even when the future is so uncertain? From experience, you would know it when you have achieved a peace of mind once you have made that decision. If you are uneasy or restless, then maybe it is not the right decision at all.
When we depend on God in all of our choices, He will give us wisdom and carefully direct us. When we do this, we avoid unnecessary trouble.
While we may have the information or knowledge at our disposal and experience to base our decision with, it is still unreliable. But when we rely on God’s wisdom, He will guide us to help us with our choices and in our future.
If I may recommend a book that contains thousands of sound financial advices, read the Bible and start with the Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament. It contains many practical wisdom that deals with money and human relationships. It is a good book for character-building. It contains 31 chapters so you might want to read one chapter a day. That way, you would have completed the Book of Proverbs in a month and repeat it every month until it becomes part of your system and daily habits. Meditating on God’s Word will have far reaching impact that will not only shape your character but guide you into preparing your future esp. if you want to make the right financial decisions in life.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.- Proverbs 3:5-6
