When you learn of a tragedy like the one that happened in Connecticut, USA and you feel sorry for what happened but feel helpless, can you do anything?
We can all speculate the root cause of the problem. Some say, it’s gun control. Some say, it’s mental because the assailant, at the time of killing, were not of sound mind. Some say, it’s spiritual. It could go on and on….
Isn’t it ironic to know that God is not allowed in some schools in a country that is supposedly the land of the free?
I think I’m not the only one who read about America’s spiritual condition. The USA is living in a spiritual decay. That’s why countless innocent lives have been lost. Only someone possessed with an evil mind would have the boldness to kill innocent children such as the one that happened in Connecticut. This is one evil act that can only please the devil. And surprisingly, this has happened many times before and nothing has been done to prevent criminal acts like these. Why is shooting rampage or massacre in schools so common in America? And when news like this comes up, does it influence or shape potential would-be killers in the future? Since then, crimes of this nature have been replicated in other parts of the world. When you hear news like these, it would leave you speechless. You just don’t know what to say but ponder, how can they do this to innocent people, much more, the little ones?
I wouldn’t be surprised if America is now considered the modern day Sodom and Gomorrah or even worse. Even the late Ruth Graham, wife of the great evangelist of the last century, Dr. Billy Graham said, God should apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah if He will not punish America for her sinful nature these days. There is so much evil in this country. Lest I be taken out of context, there is in fact, so much evil in the world today. Sexual immorality, idolatry, gambling, drugs, rape, murder and senseless killings, stealing, even habitual lying – these sinful acts only promote what the devil has been doing since the beginning of man. The Bible says:
The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy… – John 10:10a
In the midst of all these tragic events happening all over the world, can you do something meaningful instead?
I can only suggest one thing: It’s time to pray.
With all these sad and tragic incidents happening around the world, we will never run out of prayer points.
Pray for the families who were affected by this tragedy. Pray for the families of the assailant too. And pray that this will not happen again. Pray for protection for your loved ones. Pray for justice. Pray for love to dominate this world instead of evil. Pray for the brokenhearted. Pray that the Lord will bind up their wounds. Even, pray for forgiveness. We don’t have to experience something violent to say that the world is now full of evil these days. Pray for righteousness in your country. Pray for a spiritual revival not only in America but for the rest of the world for evil is in our midst. Despite this fact, don’t lose hope. Hope is something we await that is sure to come when we put faith in it. But our hope should rests in the Lord, not in man.
The bible verse quoted above is not yet complete. And this completes the whole point of this verse:
John 10:10b says: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
This was Jesus saying it even though the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8), Jesus came and has conquered evil. And we can have abundant life if we will seek Jesus in our hearts by faith.
We may not understand why God allow these things to happen but take heart.
God is in control And God is calling us to have faith in Him.
And faith is expressed when we call on the One whom we do not see but believe that He exists.
I dedicate this prayer to the families of the children who were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, USA:
Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, I ask that you give comfort and peace to the distressed families of this tragic incident. Have mercy and heal their broken hearts, O Lord. And I pray that you will send your holy angels to protect the innocent little ones in all parts of the world so that they will not go through the same fate that befell these children today. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
